The Gryphon was a gigantic and majestic creature who was part lion and part eagle. Despite being the strongest good-willed inhabitant in Wonderland, he was captured by the Queen of Hearts's forces and locked away deep in the Mad Hatter's laboratory.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Edit
Gryphon was ordered by the Queen to take Alice to meet the Mock Turtle, which he did, and stayed with them for a long time, demanding that the Turtle to tell its history, as well as several poems. The two creatures had gone on to explain certain features of their world which were apparently nonsense to Alice, before she and the Gryphon were summoned to a criminal trial, leaving the Mock Turtle behind.
American McGee's Alice Edit
Following the defeat of the Mad Hatter, the Gryphon was rescued from his cage and suggested that Alice permit him to be her commander, as he will gather the forces "whose allegiance [Alice's] courage and skill had already won" to fight against the Queen of Hearts.
Alice did not arrive in time in Royal Rage however, and after a head-to-head showdown with the Jabberwock, the Gryphon was mortally wounded, causing Alice to slay the Jabberwock once and for all. After slaying the Jabberwock, Gryphon told Alice that because she defeated the Jabberwock, she already avenged Gryphon's (impending) death and encouraged Alice to fight the Red Queen. His final dying words to Alice were "Do your best, Alice; you can only do your best; you can always do... best." Alice took a moment to mourn his death.
The Gryphon seemed to be restored when Alice regained her sanity, following the death of the Queen of Hearts, seen flying in the Caterpillar's Plot area. However, Gryphon doesn't seem to appear in the final scene with Alice and her Wonderland friends.
Alice: Madness Returns Edit
Gryphon was implied to be deceased as the Mock Turtle built the ship, HMS Gryphon, "in memory of his fallen friend." Like the White Rabbit, the Gryphon may have been an early casualty of the new madness consuming Alice's mind, leaving Wonderland more vulnerable to the Infernal Train and its army of Ruin. It is unknown if Gryphon was revived during or after the events of Madness Returns like he was in American McGee's Alice.
The Gryphon had the body, tail, and back legs of a lion and the head, wings, and front legs of an eagle. He had blue eyes, light brown beak and front legs, and brown wings. His eagle head had white feathers with brown tips, and his lion tail tuft was also white with brown tips. His lion body was a combination of yellow and brown shade.
- In heraldry, the gryphon's amalgamation of lion and eagle gains in courage and boldness, and it is always drawn to powerful fierce monsters. It is used to denote strength and military courage and leadership.
- The Gryphon is the only character in Madness Returns that died after the events of American McGee's Alice who did not make an appearance whatsoever. All other characters were either alive and well or their memory was shown. The Gryphon was only spoken of, and when he was spoken of, he was mentioned as deceased, although he was alive and well at the end of Alice like all the other characters.
- After the Gryphon's death in Alice, his animation still shows him to be breathing and his eyes are still wide open. This was probably overlooked by Rogue Entertainment.
