You selfish, misbegotten, and unnatural child! You smelled the smoke. But you were in dreamland taking tea with your friends. You couldn't be bothered. Your room was protected and spared – while your family upstairs roasted in an inferno of incredible horror.
— The Jabberwock blamingg Alice Liddell[1]

The Jabberwock, also known as the Jabberwocky, was a creature of Wonderland and an enemy of Alice Liddell, who acted as a monstrous manifestation of Alice's survivor guilt over the death of her family.

Biography

Through the Looking-Glass

The Jabberwock in the poem.

Alice never met the Jabberwock personally during her childhood, only in a poem entitled Jabberwocky.

She first heard of the Jabberwock during her time in the Looking Glass World. In an early scene in which she first encounters the chess piece characters White King and White Queen, Alice finds a book written in a seemingly unintelligible language. Realizing that she is travelling through an inverted world, she recognizes that the verses on the pages are written in mirror-writing. She holds a mirror to one of the poems, and reads the reflected verse of "Jabberwocky". She finds the nonsense verse as puzzling as the odd land she has passed into, later revealed as a dreamscape.

In the poem, the Jabberwock was described as a frightening monster that was slain by an unknown hero that used the Vorpal Blade. Although Alice liked the poem and it made her think, due to the unusual words in it, she found the poem hard to understand, and only got that it was about someone killing something.

American McGee's Alice

After his encounter with the hero and the Vorpal Blade, the Jabberwock was left hideously mutilated and weak. As a result, several of his body parts were mechanical, presumably engineered by the Mad Hatter, as a sketch of the Jabberwock appeared in his book, The Technical Marvels of M. Hatter.[2]

After being "re-built," the Jabberwock became the Queen of Hearts most dangerous servant and her most powerful line of defense. His new mechanical wings made him a skilled flyer, while his furnace-like heart enabled him to breathe massive gouts of fire. He was also capable of firing lasers from his eyes, implying that they were mechanically augmented as well. Alice was sent to find the Jabberwock in order to complete the Eye Staff, which was the only thing that could breach the gates of Queensland.[3]

Jabberwock's Lair

The Jabberwock in his lair, Alice's burning home.

Alice first encountered the Jabberwock inside a burning manifestation of her former home in the Land of Fire and Brimstone. Inside the lair, the Jabberwock cruelly tormented Alice verbally, placing her at blame for the fire and the death of her family, before facing her in combat. With the help of the Gryphon, Alice managed to wound Jabberwock, stabbing out one of his eyes. Although the beast fled with his life, Alice claimed his lost eye as the final piece of the Eye Staff.[1]

Later, Alice found the Jabberwock again in Queensland. The Gryphon faced the Jabberwock one-on-one, only to be mortally wounded. Infuriated, Alice fought the Jabberwock herself, using the Eye Staff against its former owner. Eventually, Alice would avenge the Gryphon by defeating the Jabberwock, causing his wings to disintegrate as his own furnace heart suffered a fatal overload.[4] During Alice's final battle with the Queen of Hearts, the Jabberwock's head appeared as a part of one of the Queen's tentacles and it shoot lasers.[5]

Alice: Madness Returns

Jabberwock attack

The Jabberwock figures closing on Alice.

A year after saving Wonderland and leaving Rutledge Asylum, although the Jabberwock was never revived, Alice was still haunted by his image during her hallucinations. He was first briefly glimpsed in an image of Alice's burning house during her session with Angus Bumby.

While walking in the streets of London, several human figures with the Jabberwock's head approached her in a slum, and tried to attack her. They quickly disappeared when Pris Witless found her, signifying that they were just another hallucination.

Vorpal Blade in Vale of Tears

The Vorpal Blade lodged in Jabberwock's skeleton.

When Alice hallucinated Pris transforming into a Jabberwock on Pris' rooftop, it proved to be too much for Alice, and she slipped into unconsciousness and triggered her return to Wonderland.[6]

As Alice traveled through the Vale of Tears, she found the Vorpal Blade sticking out of the skull of the skeletal remains of the Jabberwock. Soon after Alice obtained the blade, the skeleton turned to dust and blew away.[7]

His image is later seen on the cover of a book in the Dollhouse.[8]

Trivia

  • There is a correlation between Pris and the Jabberwock. A fan theory is that due to the fact Pris was killed by Alice in the Beta of the game that Pris died after being pushed off the roof by Alice. After the rooftop Jabberwock cutscene, Pris is not heard from or seen again throughout the game, nor is the Jabberwock (other than art and imagery) until you find his remains. It is possible that in the real world of London, this is Alice encountering Pris' body.
  • His absence from the sequel could be from Alice getting over her guilt from the first game as the Jabberwock was a manifestation of her guilt. Logically, he would not have been revived when Wonderland was restored.
  • The Jabberwock is one of American McGee's favorite characters in American McGee's Alice. The other being the Boojum.[9]
